Brock Purdy QB for the San Fransico 49ers is up for a new contract. He has done very well in his rookie contract years. Making a Superbowl appearance, being a candidate for NFL MVP, 49ers passing yard record, and countless others.
All of this while being picked last in his draft class, he was the famed Mr. Irrelevant. The last player selected at the end of every years NFL draft. Usually we see these players sit on the bench or even dropped from their team but Brock Purdy has been that exception. He is the starting QB for the 49ers. A star that no one thought could make it, but he has made it despite the odds.
Brock Purdy is up for a new contract this offseason, marking the end of his rookie contract. The real question is how much money will he be paid?
His rookie contract was 4 years for $3.7 million which made him the lowest paid starting QB in the league, the 49ers got a steal with Purdy.
How much will he be paid?
He currently does not have a new contract but it is in the works.
He is estimated by analyist to make anywhere from 45-55 million dollars making him one of, if not the highest paid player in the league.
You may wonder why he is being considered for such a high contract here are a few reasons:
Potential: Brock Purdy has showed a high amount of potential, being considered for MVP and a Superbowl appearance is only the start for him. We can see him bloom even more in the future as he gets more comfortable in his position.
Youth: Brock Purdy compared to other QBs making close to 50 million dollars is youthful, he has a high upside as he has only just completed his rookie contract. To be offered this amount of money this young shows that the 49ers may see him as a long term option.
Popularity: It is no surprise Brock Purdy is a league favorite for his underdog story. Teams love this as it makes them more money selling merchandise and bringing in more attention to the 49ers.
With these upsides comes downsides as well.
Some downsides include:
Youth: Brock Purdy’s youth is a pro and a con, we have seen him play over the last years and he shows talent but many QBs of the past have done the same thing, they have great years then fall off after. We are not quite sure what Brock Purdy is really capable of and this can be a fear for the 49ers.
Team: Many have said Brock Purdy is a system QB. We saw him with a healthy team, but we also saw him with a hurt team and it didn’t look to promising.
Motivation: The big problem with offering a QB especially a QB this young into his career this much money is the possibility for lack of motivation. It is a trend of the past, QBs become the highest paid player then they have a slump in performance. This is because the player has reached the max, the top of the league in pay and sees no benefit in trying harder.
Brock Purdy in the end is not worth making the highest paid NFL player. He is a great player and shows a lot of talent but his pay range is closer to $35 million, rather than $55 Million.
Another possibility in the contract negotiations is the possibility of Brock Purdy changing teams. If the 49ers don’t deem Purdy worthy of $45 – $55 million dollar contract it may force Purdy to change teams in pursuit of that high contract. They may disagree on pay causing a trade. This is a possibility but unlikely. As Brock Purdy does seem like the fit for the 49ers in the coming futures.
